Top 10 Summer Activities in and Around Lakeway, Texas

Summertime means fun in the sun and Lakeway, Texas, is one of the best places to stay active this summer. We all know that physical activity is important for good health! Fortunately, Lakeway has a luxuriously long summer season, so you can spend multiple months exercising in the radiant Texas sun.

With parks, trails and other outdoor spaces, Lakeway is the perfect place to enjoy endless summer activities. The city even has a covered swim center and other indoor options for those rare rainy days. The Lakeway Activity Center offers classes for adults and kids, for example, and summer camps for children of all ages.

Exercising and being outdoors is a great way to keep your joints healthy and your mind happy.

Although we personally feel that the possibilities for staying active in Lakeway and the surrounding areas are limitless, below are our top ten recommendations for enjoying a happy and healthy summer season. Just remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen (and of course, protect your joints!) while you're having a ball outside!

Top 10 Summer Activities in and Around Lakeway

1. Go Boating

Located next to Lake Travis, Lakeway attracts boating enthusiasts from Austin and around the country. Rent a boat from Texas Sailing or Lakeway Marina and try waterskiing, tubing, or swimming. Or, just enjoy the beautiful view with some cool air and sunshine.

2. Take a Hike - or a Walk!

Lakeway City Park provides 64 acres of well-maintained parkland and nearly two miles of trails. You can reach the park by driving to 502 Hurst Creek Road or by boating to Hurst Creek Cove on Lake Travis. You’ll get quite a workout exploring this 20-acre tract at the Canyonlands, located at Rough Hollow Cove, which is an inlet at Lake Travis. The Canyonlands offers a variety of hiking experiences, from the easy Rim Trail that leads to a spectacular vista to the challenging-but-worthwhile Mt. Lakeway Trail.

3. Take Fido to the Bark Park

Playing with your dog helps you stay active and can help keep your joints in good health when done regularly – just like walking, golfing or swimming. The Bark Park at Lakeway City Park is a great place to run or play fetch with your favorite furry friend.

4. Play Baseball at Ranger Field

Situated just beyond Lakeway City Park at 502 Hurst Creek Road, Ranger Field is the best place in Lakeway to swing your bat and run some bases.

5. Hop on Your Bike

Pedal your way to outdoor fun on the Lakeway Boulevard Hike and Bike Trail. Starting as a sidewalk before quickly turning into a crushed granite path, the trail wanders down the median past the Swim Center in one direction and past a sculpture garden in the other direction.

6. Go Swimming!

There are plenty of opportunities all around beautiful Lake Travis, especially on the hottest of the hot days. You can also access a variety of swim programs at Lakeway Swim Center, which offers everything from summer swim lessons to the local Master’s Swim Chapter. But our personal favorite? Cool off at the Hamilton Pool swimming hole just outside of Bee Cave.

7. Check Out the Birding Spots

Because of its warm climate and unique location near Lake Travis, Lakeway is a great place to go bird watching. Several birds call Central Texas home during the summer, including barn swallows, black-chinned hummingbirds, painted buntings and nighthawks. You might also spot permanent residents, such as the tufted titmouse and at least three different types of woodpeckers.

8. Visit the Skate Park

Lakeway Skate Park combines bowl and street elements in a 9,000 square feet skate park for skateboards and in-line skates only. Whether you're a veteran or new to the skating scene, be sure to wear a helmet along with knee and elbow pads to prevent injury when performing your favorite moves.

9. Improve Your Serve

Live Oak Tennis Courts features four courts that are open to the public on a “first come, first serve” basis. World of Tennis is another one of our favorite options for making the most of the Texas sunshine!

10. Finally Nab that Hole-in-One

The Hills of Lakeway Golf in Austin offers two championship courses for members: The Hills Country Club and Lakeway Country Club. These courses, designed by Jack Nicklaus, offer an extraordinary golfing experience.
