This week, we speak with Lindsey, an Operating Room (OR) Nurse who delivers Better Care By Design at our Muve Lakeway Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) location. Lindsey is part of the team responsible for making sure that we're delivering optimized surgical care for patients in the OR, and her commitment to going above and beyond in the name of teamwork is one of the many reasons she's such a perfect fit at Muve Lakeway ASC. Read on to learn more about Lindsey's path to OR nursing, why she believes in the bright future of Muve, and what she does in her spare time to Get Up and Muving.
What is your role as an OR Nurse at Muve Lakeway ASC?
I am the Operating Room Nurse here at Muve Lakeway ASC. Most of my job is to make sure everything runs smoothly in the operating rooms before, during, and after your procedure.
Why did you join Muve Lakeway ASC and Stay Suites?
I joined the team after working at another facility with both Dr. Heinrich and Dr. Dodgin, affiliated partner surgeons at Muve Lakeway ASC and Muve Lakeway Stay Suites. I knew their caliber as surgeons and when they told me just a little bit about the program they were helping to start here, I knew I had to be a part of it! I knew right then that this was the future of healthcare!
What is the change that you want to see Muve make in the world of healthcare?
I think that Muve IS the change that healthcare has been needing for a long time. The focus is on the patient and our partnership in his or her healthcare and well-being. With the Muve program, I believe that you are not a number, you are an important member of your own healthcare team. My hope is that Muve can be the new “normal”. All patients should have the opportunity to be involved in their care the way Muve aims to do it.
Which Muve Value do you steward? Why?
Joy! It may sound crazy, but I truly feel joy when I see patients leave the OR and walk just a few short hours later. It really makes my job come full-circle to see the change in patients as they get better. I share in their success.
Why did you choose to work in healthcare?
I love taking care of people. I have been doing it my whole life with my older family members and siblings. I get a deep sense of satisfaction from helping others, fixing problems, and making people feel better. Even if it's just a kind word and a smile. So when I went to college, Nursing was a no brainer! I feel so lucky to have found a career that I absolutely love and to have excelled beyond what I ever imagined I would be able to do.
What is the life path that led you to Muve?
I started out of Nursing school knowing I wanted to be in the Operating Room. Many of my professors urged me to “hone my skills” in this area even before I graduated because they knew how much I was made for this kind of work. I began as an Emergency Room (ER) nurse straight out of school, but I felt like I wasn’t able to make the impact that I wanted to make. So I quickly moved to Intensive Care Unit (ICU), knowing that acute care was something I was good at. In the ICU I felt like I was really making a difference, but I always had my heart set on the OR. And after 3 years, I finally made it to the OR and I haven’t looked back. OR nursing is a hyper-specialized sector of the nursing world, and I’m so happy to count myself as part of this team. While my patients usually don’t remember me due to the surgical and anesthesia process, I know that I am making the difference that I set out to make a decade ago and I couldn’t be prouder!
What does Better Care By Design mean to you?
Better Care By Design, to me, means that we aren’t just doing things because someone else does it that way. We have thought through all the things that we do both with and for our patients. We have found what we believe are the very best ways to care for and support patients, and we have a reason for everything! The results speak for themselves. I think our patients excel because we have carefully designed a program to help them succeed on their own as well as in our care. Teaching someone how to care for themselves after such a big change is so empowering! And in my opinion, our happy and successful patients are the proof!
What are your favorite ways to Get Up And Muving?
I love being outside! My boyfriend is a fishing guide and we have a dog that loves to run. So the 3 of us love to go to the park, hike, boat, and swim. Being active is huge part of my life.
What are you most proud of when it comes to Muve and Muve Lakeway ASC/Muve Lakeway Stay Suites?
I'm proud of our entire team for the level of dedication we have all given to the Muve approach and to delivering care as part of the team here at Muve Lakeway ASC and Muve Lakeway Stay Suites. I can honestly say that each and every one of our teammates has embraced the Muve model, shifted our way of thinking into “Better Care By Design”, and really hit the ground running. Its so refreshing to work with a team full of people who share the same level of dedication to practicing care the best way we can. I'm lucky to be a part of this team.
...and Lastly, What Would You Say Is The Thing About Muve that is MOST Different From Other Care Settings or Programs?
Can I say everything?! Ha! With the Muve program, I truly believe you are not a number, you are an integral part of your own healthcare team. We teach you how to care for yourself and we aim to help you the whole way through. We don’t just tell you what to do and expect you to understand; we urge you to ask us questions so we can help you be the best you!
